Need to adjust your health coverage?
Life changes can necessitate adjustments to your health cover once you’re a member of a medical scheme. This could include events like marriage, having a baby, or being diagnosed with a chronic condition or disease.
Updating dependants
You have the flexibility to add or remove dependants at any time throughout the year. Newly added spouses and newborn babies within 90 days (Discovery) or 30 days (Momentum Health) of the event can join without underwriting, meaning no waiting periods.
Other new dependants may undergo underwriting. Special dependants like parents can be added if they’re financially dependent on the main member, following medical scheme rules and your employer’s policy. You can find the necessary forms under the Forms tab.
Changing options or schemes
Momentum Health allows option changes within 30 days of a life-changing event or diagnosis, such as a cancer diagnosis or divorce. Discovery permits specified downgrades during the year.
Note that moving to a lower plan may result in owing the scheme if you’ve spent more from your Personal/Medical Savings Account than the amount contributed at the time of downgrade.
All other upgrades, downgrades, and scheme changes are only allowed at the end of each year, effective January 1 of the following year. Refer to the Year-End Option Changes Card for details.

Chronic medication and disease management
If you’ve been diagnosed with a chronic condition like hypertension, diabetes, or an illness such as oncology or kidney failure, it’s crucial to register this with your medical scheme.
Follow the scheme’s process for program registration. Obtain your membership number first and then submit your application for chronic and disease registration.
Children becoming adults
Momentum Health applies child dependent rates until the age of 27 upon receiving proof of studying. If the child is not pursuing studies, adult contribution rates will commence the month following their 21st birthday. Discovery applies adult contribution rates from the first day of the month following the 21st birthday.

Updating Personal Information
For changes to your address, contact details, or bank information that affect your monthly contribution, it’s best to update these directly with your medical scheme. Changes not impacting your contribution can be handled through your employer.
